How to Care for Your Engraved Cutting Board — Tips from Our Pompano Beach Shop
You just got a beautiful personalized cutting board — maybe as a wedding gift, housewarming present, or something you treated yourself to. Living in South Florida's humid climate, proper care is extra important. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your laser engraved cutting board looking great for years.
Can You Use an Engraved Cutting Board?
Yes! Laser engraved cutting boards are fully functional. The engraving is etched into the surface of the wood, so it won't affect food safety or the board's usability. Many of our customers use one side for display and the other side for actual cutting — but using the engraved side is perfectly fine too.
Daily Care Tips (Especially Important in Florida's Humidity)
- Hand wash only — never put a wooden cutting board in the dishwasher. The heat and moisture will cause warping, cracking, and can damage the engraving over time.
- Wash with mild soap and warm water — a gentle scrub with a sponge is all you need.
- Dry immediately — this is critical in Florida's humidity. Don't let the board sit in water or air dry. Towel dry it right after washing and store it upright so air circulates on both sides.
- Don't soak — prolonged water exposure is the #1 enemy of wooden boards.
Oil Your Board Regularly
In South Florida's humidity, wood can absorb excess moisture if not properly sealed. Apply a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or cutting board oil every 2–4 weeks. Here's how:
- Make sure the board is clean and completely dry
- Pour a small amount of mineral oil onto the surface
- Spread it evenly with a soft cloth or paper towel
- Let it soak in for at least 2–4 hours (overnight is best)
- Wipe off any excess oil
This keeps the wood hydrated, prevents cracking, and maintains the contrast of the laser engraving.
Removing Stains and Odors
If your board picks up stains or smells from food prep:
- Lemon and salt — sprinkle coarse salt on the surface, then rub with a cut lemon half. The salt acts as a mild abrasive while the lemon deodorizes and brightens.
- Baking soda paste — mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste, apply to stains, let sit 5 minutes, then scrub gently and rinse.
- White vinegar spray — spritz with diluted white vinegar for a quick sanitize and deodorize.
Storage Tips for South Florida
- Store upright or on a board rack — not flat on a countertop where moisture can get trapped underneath
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- If you don't have AC running 24/7, consider storing in a cabinet to control humidity exposure
- Don't store near the dishwasher where steam escapes
How Long Does the Engraving Last?
Laser engraving on a well-maintained cutting board lasts for years. The laser burns the design into the wood fibers, so it won't wash or rub off. With proper care — hand washing, regular oiling, no dishwasher — your engraved board will look great for a decade or more.
