Metal vs. Vinyl NFC Business Cards: Which Should You Get?

Short answer: choose a metal NFC business card if the card itself needs to make the impression — it is laser engraved, has real weight in the hand, and includes a full year of Pro on our app. Choose a full-color vinyl NFC card if your brand depends on color, a photo or a detailed design, or if you are outfitting a team or an event on a budget. Both tap exactly the same way on iPhone and Android, both open the same digital business card, and both can be updated anytime without reprinting. The difference is look, feel, price and the Pro time included.

Below is a side-by-side comparison, the real cost math at different quantities, and a quick way to decide — from a laser engraving shop in Pompano Beach that makes both.

What is actually the same

It helps to start here, because most of what an NFC card does has nothing to do with the material. Every card we make carries a small chip that stores one link — the link to your own digital business card. When someone holds their phone near the card, your profile opens in their browser with your name, title, phone, email, website, social links and a one-tap Save Contact button. Nobody has to download an app.

Because the chip only stores the link, you can change jobs, phone numbers or social handles and the card keeps working: edit your profile and the next tap shows the update. Both card types also come with a QR code on your digital card that you can show or send to anyone whose phone does not have NFC turned on. When metal is the better choice

A metal card is the one people comment on. It is heavier than anything else in their wallet, and the laser engraved design has a crisp, permanent look that does not scuff off like ink. It tends to make the most sense when:

  • Each card is handed to someone who matters. Realtors at a listing appointment, contractors meeting a homeowner, financial advisors, attorneys, consultants and owners who hand out a few cards a week rather than a few hundred.
  • Your logo works in one tone. Laser engraving is essentially two-tone: the engraved mark and the card surface. Bold logos, monograms, clean wordmarks and line art look sharp. Gradients, photos and multi-color logos need to be simplified first.
  • You want the Pro features anyway. Metal cards include a full year of Pro free — normally $24/year — which adds tap and scan stats, contact exchange (people can send you their info back) and unlimited social links.

One detail worth knowing: metal blocks radio signals, so our metal cards are engraved on the front only and the back is left blank so the chip can be read through it. When you hand one over, tell people to tap the back of the card to the top of their phone. When full-color vinyl is the better choice

A vinyl card puts your full design on the card: brand colors, a photo, a gradient, a detailed illustration. It costs less than half as much as metal, which changes the math when you need more than a handful. Vinyl usually wins when:

  • Color is part of your brand. Salons, boutiques, restaurants, photographers, fitness studios and anyone whose logo loses its identity in one tone.
  • You are equipping a team. A sales floor, a real estate office or a service crew where everyone needs a card and the budget is shared.
  • You are giving cards away at volume. Trade shows, networking events and grand openings, where cards walk off in quantity.
  • You want to try NFC before committing. A small vinyl order is an inexpensive way to see how tapping fits into how you meet people.

Vinyl cards include 3 months of Pro free. After that, the card keeps working on the Free plan, and you can renew Pro anytime for $24/year or $3/month.

The real cost at different quantities

Per-card pricing drops automatically at 10 and 25 cards, and there is no setup fee on either type:

  • 1 card: metal $39 · vinyl $19
  • 5 cards: metal $195 · vinyl $95
  • 10 cards: metal $320 · vinyl $150
  • 25 cards: metal $675 · vinyl $300

Two things to factor in. First, the metal price already includes a year of Pro ($24 value), so for a single card the effective gap is smaller than it looks. Second, an NFC card replaces reprinting: you do not need a new box of cards every time your title or number changes. For teams, our Team plan is $100/year for 5 digital cards managed from one dashboard; physical cards are ordered separately in whichever material each person wants.

Can you mix metal and vinyl?

Yes, and plenty of businesses should. A common setup is a metal card for the owner or the people closing deals, and vinyl cards for the rest of the team or for event giveaways. Since every card points to a digital profile, they all behave the same way when tapped — the material only changes the first impression.

A quick way to decide

  1. Look at your logo. If it only works in color, go vinyl. If it looks good in a single tone, metal is an option.
  2. Count your hand-outs. A few a week to high-value contacts points to metal. Dozens at events points to vinyl.
  3. Check the budget per person. For a team of 10+, vinyl at $15 or $12 each is hard to beat; metal at $32 or $27 each is a premium choice for the people who need it.
  4. Still unsure? Start with a free digital card, share it by link or QR code for a week, then add the physical card that fits.
